When I look at college football, I don't see just games. I see America's closest thing to international futbol - regional pride, generational loyalty, and most importantly, a largely untapped market for small CPG brands. With NIL partnerships opening doors that were locked for decades, smart founders should be paying attention to what's happening on Saturdays.
At Pickle Advisors, we invest in consumer culture. And nothing captures American consumer culture quite like 100,000 people tailgating at 8am for a noon kickoff. So in the spirit of competition (and finding the next billion-dollar brand hiding in plain sight), here's this week's matchup of gridiron battles and CPG brawls.
#17 SMU vs Baylor = Poppi vs Health-Ade Kombucha
Dallas money meets Waco tradition. Poppi (#17 SMU) is that venture-backed disruptor with perfect branding and Erewhon distribution - they made prebiotic soda cool. Health-Ade (Baylor) built the kombucha category when everyone thought it was just hippie tea. This is new money versus established craft. Edge: Poppi by 7.
#15 Michigan vs #18 Oklahoma = Zingerman's vs Head Country BBQ
Legacy brands in transition. Zingerman's (#15 Michigan) is Ann Arbor institution turned national mail-order empire - premium positioning that actually delivers. Head Country (#18 Oklahoma) has that Ponca City authenticity and SEC ambitions, just like the Sooners. Both trying to scale tradition. Edge: Zingerman's by 3.
Duke vs Illinois = Fly By Jing vs Mike's Hot Honey
Overachievers disrupting expectations. Fly By Jing (Duke) took Sichuan flavors mainstream through Whole Foods - smart money making smart moves. Mike's Hot Honey (Illinois) found white space nobody knew existed and now owns pizza partnerships nationwide. Both prove you can win without tradition. Edge: Pick 'em.
#12 Arizona State vs Mississippi State = Cholula vs Crystal Hot Sauce
Desert heat versus Delta heat. Cholula (#12 ASU) has that Mexican authenticity with American scale - wooden cap energy in a glass bottle world. Crystal (Mississippi State) is Louisiana loyalty personified - they don't need to be fancy when they're on every table in the state. Culture versus commerce. Edge: Crystal by 4.
Iowa vs #16 Iowa State = Busch Light Corn Cans vs Twisted Tea
The Cy-Hawk Trophy meets beverage bedlam. Busch Light Corn Cans (Iowa) literally created a special edition for Iowa fans - that's knowing your market. Twisted Tea (#16 Iowa State) is the underdog that hits harder than expected, perfect for Cyclone fans. This is tradition versus trying too hard. Edge: Busch Light in a rout.
The NIL Opportunity Nobody's Talking About
Here's what keeps me up at night: College athletes can now partner with brands. But most CPG founders are still thinking influencers and TikTok. Meanwhile, there's a quarterback in Tempe with 50K engaged followers who actually stocks your hot sauce in his apartment.
Smart brands should be:
Creating campus-specific SKUs (imagine Poppi "Hilltop Red" for SMU)
Sponsoring player cooking shows and dorm room reviews
Building regional heat before going national
Partnering with O-linemen, not just QBs - authenticity wins
The same founders who understand community-driven growth need to recognize that college football IS community. It's loyal, it's local, and it's looking for authentic brands that get it.
At Pickle Advisors, we're actively exploring NIL strategies for our portfolio companies. Because sometimes the best marketing isn't a Super Bowl ad - it's a defensive end from Detroit repping your BBQ sauce.
Every Saturday tells a story. What's yours?

P.S. - If you're a founder watching games this Saturday, notice which local brands get the loudest cheers during TV timeouts. That's your blueprint.
